Why did you embark on a career in Dermatology?
I have always been interested in skin (some might say obsessed!), even as a young child. Medicine is in my DNA, my father and sister are both doctors, so they inspired my career path as well.
What area of Dermatology particularly interests you and why?
My interests have evolved over time. I still quite enjoy medical dermatology, particularly treating conditions such as acne, rosacea and dermatitis. But aesthetics has really become the heart of my practice. I love the marriage of artistry and science and seeing that little confidence boost that comes from a subtle “treatment” I am so fortunate to meet so many amazing patients, hear their stories and watch their lives unfold over the years. The field of aesthetic dermatology changes so quickly, so I am always learning which keeps me on my toes too.
What skincare products should none of us live without, no matter our age or gender?
Without a doubt, sunscreen!
Did you see a change in skin issues with lockdown?
This past year has obviously been incredibly difficult. Lockdown stress wreaked havoc on everyone’s skin, exacerbating essentially every skin condition, acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, you name it. I think we really started to focus more on our skin and faces as well given Zoom and all the time spent at home. This has driven a lot of people to seek dermatologic and aesthetic treatments. While I see the benefit of small, subtle enhancements, it’s important to strike a delicate balance with not being overly critical of our appearance.
What is your advice for someone who is unsure about injectable or machine-based treatments?
There is no rush to do cosmetic treatments. Ask around for practitioner recommendations and start with a consultation initially to discuss which options might be suitable for your particular concerns. The amazing thing about our industry is there are so many different, customisable therapies available, so you can dip your toes in the water in a way that works for you.
